The Authors

Emily McCulloch Childs

As the granddaughter of art critic, artist and writer Alan McCulloch, and daughter of art critic, writer and publisher Susan McCulloch and author and journalist Kevin Childs, Emily spent a large part of her childhood in galleries, surrounded by artists and writers.

Born in Melbourne in 1976, she grew up partly at her grandparent’s house on the Mornington Peninsula, an old rambling cottage full of books and art, much of which was produced by family and friends such as Arthur Boyd. Much of her education in the arts occurred here with the McCulloch family. She assisted in the family endeavours of writing, publishing and art from an early age. She gave her first gallery tour to visitors to the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (where her grandfather was founding director) at age four, and like her mother before her, assisted with the Encyclopedia as a teenager.

Her interests in the arts, always wide-ranging, led to her studying piano and composition at La Trobe University, although her love of literature resulted in her majoring in English with a BA (Hons) in 1998. She has worked in publishing companies and newspapers in London, art galleries in Melbourne, has written for Antiques & Art and Australian Art Collector, and was on the panel for Art Melbourne 06 Off the Wall.

In 2003 she formed the company Aus Art Editions with her mother, publishers of McCulloch’s Encyclopedia of Australian Art.

She is co-author and publisher of the Encyclopedia with Susan, with whom she is also writing a book on Aboriginal women artists.
